People can care about others even though they don't love them. I know you really want to know what he's thinking, but take my advice. Give him time when he's ready to tell you he will. Trust me cause i've learned from past experiences.
1.Whenever your ex keeps the lines of communication open, it means he's not totally finished with your relationship. He might stick around as a "friend", or call you up with a thousand platonic excuses to find out how you're doing, but what your boyfriend is really up to is keeping tabs on you. Your ex wants to know where you are, just in case he reverses his decision to end things. It's comforting for him to know that he can get you back anytime he wants, especially if you're not dating anyone else.
2.If your ex constantly calls you to talk about the old relationship, or about where both of you went wrong, or how such a perfect relationship could go so wrong, or about how much they loved you while both of you were dating, or anything else that makes your heart feel like romantic.
3.Before you and your ex boyfriend got together he probably tried to impress you a lot. This is what guys do. If he is currently trying to show off in anyway or vie for your attention, it is a huge clue that he wants you back. When a guy wants a girl he will try to impress her in many different ways in an attempt to entice her or make him seem better than other men.
